Dial *#06# — if a 32-digit EID number appears, the hardware is ready.
Phones tied to a network will refuse a second profile. Your provider can unlock it.

Ask support about your modeliPhones sold in mainland China have no eSIM hardware, and models bought in Hong Kong or Macao are excluded — except the iPhone 13 mini, 12 mini, SE 2020 and XS. A few Samsung and Pixel models sold in South Korea, Japan and Australia also differ. When in doubt, the *#06# check is the final word.
If an “Add eSIM” option exists on your phone, it supports eSIM. Here is where to look.
Settings › Mobile Service › Add eSIM
On older iOS versions the menu is called Cellular.

One UI wording varies a little by model year.
